Is it a cold or the flu?
You have a runny nose and cough, and you wonder if
you may be coming down with the flu or if your symptoms
are signs that the common cold has struck. The flu and
a cold are two completely different illnesses. How do
you determine if your symptoms are the flu or a cold?
A cold generally introduces itself slowly with nasal
congestion and/or cough and sometimes a fever. Symptoms
of the flu typically strike suddenly. These include
fever, chills, muscle aches, weakness, headache, loss
of appetite and sometimes diarrhea.
Generally, flu symptoms last two to five days. The best
treatment for individuals with flu symptoms is to drink
plenty of fluids and get lots of bed rest. Consult your
health care provider if you have a cough that lingers
after your other symptoms disappear.
