The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that the following individuals receive the vaccine:

  • Persons aged 65 and older and children under the age of 2;
  • Residents of nursing homes;
  • Adults and children with chronic disorders of the pulmonary or cardiovascular systems, including asthma;
  • Adults and children who have required regular medical follow-up or hospitalization during the past year because of a chronic disease, kidney dysfunction and blood disorders;
  • Children and teens (age 6 months to 18 years) who are receiving long-term aspirin therapy and therefore might be at risk for developing Reyes syndrome after influenza infection; and
  • Women who will be in the second or third trimester of pregnancy during the flu season.
