Keep Safety in Mind

As the days get longer and the temperatures warm up, individuals will move outdoors to mow the lawn or work on the farm. To avoid injuries, follow these tips for proper use of lawnmowers and tractors.

Lawnmower Safety Tips

  • Wear proper clothing to protect your body from harm when operating a lawnmower. Sturdy, non-slip shoes should be worn instead of tennis shoes or sandals. Long pants help protect your legs from small rocks and sticks that may be thrown from under the mower.

  • Keep children away from lawn mowers and do not allow a child to operate a mower until he or she is mature enough to handle the task safely.

  • Never leave a mower running unattended. You should also never leave the key in the switch.

  • Be careful when operating a lawnmower on a slope. Push mowers should always be used across the slope while riding mowers are generally more stable when used up and down a slope. Prevent overturning by not using a mower on steep slopes or near ditches.

  • Before you mow, check your lawn for loose objects that could be thrown by the mower. Keep children and pets away from the area being mowed.

Tractor Safety Tips

  • Do not allow extra riders on farm tractors, especially when the extra rider is not necessary for the farm work. If you must carry extra riders, drive slowly and avoid jolting your vehicle.

  • To prevent overturn deaths, make sure your tractor has a rollover protective structure and wear a seat belt.

  • Prevent turnovers by backing your tractor up a hill instead of driving it up the hill. If you must pull a load up a hill, keep the clutch and throttle operating smoothly. Do not stop or shift gears while driving up a hill.

  • Make sure your tractor has adequate lighting and a bright slow-moving vehicle emblem if you will be driving it on a public road.
