Stay Hydrated When Playing Sports

Participating in school sports can be a fun and rewarding experience. However, athletes need to keep themselves hydrated when participating in sports, especially those that may involve excessive sweating.

To stay hydrated when playing sports, an athlete should drink at least two cups of fluids before practice or a game, followed by five to 10 ounces of fluids every 15 to 20 minutes during practice or a game.

Once practice or a game has ended, an athlete should drink two cups of fluids for each pound of body weight lost during exercise.

The best choices to drink are those beverages that are rich in potassium, such as orange juice and V-8 juice, to replace the potassium that is lost during perspiration.
