Be Safe in the Sun
The summer season means warmer days and longer hours
of sunshine. Follow these safety tips while outdoors
this summer season:
-
Avoid the sun
You should especially avoid the sun between
the hours of 10 a.m. and 3 p.m., when the sun's
rays are strongest, and also when the UV Index is
high in your area. You can learn the UV Index in
your area by checking the local newspaper.
-
Use sunscreen
Choose a broad-spectrum sunscreen with a sun
protection factor (SPF) of at least 15. Apply it
liberally 15 to 30 minutes before going outdoors
and reapply often, especially after being in the
water or sweating.
-
Wear a hat and sunglasses
Hats with at least a three-inch brim protect
your neck, ears, eyes and scalp. Sunglasses help
to protect your eyes from damage by the sun. Choose
sunglasses that block 99 to 100 percent of the sun's
rays.
-
Cover your skin
When working outdoors, wear lightweight, long-sleeved
shirts and pants to further protect yourself from
the sun.
-
Avoid tanning beds
Tanning beds emit UVA rays, which can damage
the skin and may be linked to melanoma, the most
serious form of skin cancer.
