Ephraim McDowell Health Care Foundation
For more than 20 years the Ephraim McDowell Health Care Foundation has been dedicated to enhancing the healing environment of Ephraim McDowell Health (EMH), a not-for-profit, integrated health care system with 30 specialties, in 38 locations reaching up to 14 counties and more than 120,000 people in central Kentucky. The Foundation provides a critical support system to EMH by generating awareness, advocacy and philanthropic support allowing EMH to provide the most advanced comprehensive and compassionate care to our patients.
The Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. EMH covers the day-to-day operating costs associated with the Foundation, including salaries and expenses. About Us
A thousand smiles begin with a single gift....
Each time you give to the Foundation, your gift makes real people smile—thousands of them, actually. These real people with real needs reside right here in our region. And your donation is tax deductible to the fullest extent allowed by law, which may make you smile, too.
The Foundation has a distinguished track record extending back to 1992 that includes the creation of the Cancer Care Center at Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center. We have a history of providing charity care to individuals with low incomes or who were uninsured or underinsured, including $19.5 million in charity care in 2012 and $15.2 million in charity care in 2011. Other EMH entities also give back to our communities, including Auxiliaries at Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center and Ephraim McDowell Fort Logan Hospital; Faith Community Nursing and Community Service Health Screenings; youth activities such as the High School Artist Project and specialized Wellness Center programs. The list of such programs, in fact, is quite long.
During the 21st century, the needs of the many are great. That's why the Ephraim McDowell Health Care Foundation partners with other reputable organizations in the region to increase the benefits EMH facilities provide. Some examples of partners that help the Foundation support the Hope Clinic and Pharmacy include The Salvation Army, the Boyle County Health Department, Heart of Kentucky United Way and Ephraim McDowell Health.
Some of the projects the Foundation has supported in the past include:
- Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center cardiac catheterization lab, the highest level of technology currently available in the state
- Digital mammography, now available at Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center, Ephraim McDowell Fort Logan Hospital and Ephraim McDowell Diagnostic Center
- Gravity-fed drip IVs which provide precise delivery of chemotherapy for patients at the Ephraim McDowell Commonwealth Cancer Center
- New cardiac monitors for the Ephraim McDowell Fort Logan Hospital Emergency Department
- New Holter monitor system for the Ephraim McDowell Heart & Vascular Institute
- Cancer center lounge for patients and families staying on Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center’s cancer floor
- Adult bladder scanners for the Transitional Care Unit & Emergency Department
- A Telehealth Polycom Practitioner Cart HDX 1080p
- A fetal intrapartum monitor at Ephraim McDowell Fort Logan Hospital
- Steamer and disposal and a low-vision machine for McDowell Place of Danville
- New curriculum for A Children’s Place in order to aid learning at the daycare
- Ephraim McDowell Fort Logan Hospital, the Stanford-based facility built using funds raised during the Foundation's capital campaigns in Lincoln and surrounding counties
- Funding of technology that supports enhanced patient clinical services or services provided through numerous non-clinical initiatives of Ephraim McDowell Health
Annual Gifts
Annual contributions are donated without restriction, allowing Ephraim McDowell Health to apply them where they are needed most within the year. Annual fund gifts provide essential funding to all areas of the health system that may not be funded by other sources.

Major Gifts and Pledges
A major gift is transformative and can touch every corner of Ephraim McDowell Health. You may target your gift to a specific area or you may give an unrestricted gift for EMH to use for its greatest need. Major gifts can be made over a period of years and given in the form of cash, securities, real estate or personal property.
Matching Gifts
Employers have matching-gift programs through which your generosity can be multiplied and Ephraim McDowell Health is eligible for many. Please check with your employer.
Bequests

- A donation to the Foundation’s Good Works Fund provides the Foundation Board with the flexibility to direct funding to the health priorities of our community — and the impact can be deeply felt throughout our community. This fund supports projects in the areas of cancer care, cardiac care, women’s health, among others, as well as supporting programs such as Camp Can Do, a summer day camp with activities adapted for special needs children, and developing credentialed resident experts within clinical service lines.
- The Cancer Initiatives Fund provides resources for education, prevention, early screening and detection, and state of the art diagnostic equipment. This fund also supports EMH’s Cancer Care program which delivers care to cancer patients, and education and emotional support to their family members.
- Contributions to our Cardiac Care Fund will ensure Ephraim McDowell Health facilities continue to be equipped with state of the art equipment and innovative technologies in the treatment of you or your family’s cardiac health issues.
- The Ephraim McDowell Health Chaplain’s Fund benefits EMH patients and Associates in need of vital financial assistance for prescriptions and basic living needs. Contributions to the Chaplain’s Fund can have a profound effect on someone’s life during a time of great stress or sorrow.
- Your contribution to the Hope Clinic and Pharmacy benefits patients who are medically underserved and may not be able access the care they need due to financial, geographic, or numerous other obstacles. Hope Clinic exists to promote health, prevent illness and monitor chronic diseases.
- Many communities, including ours, are facing an extreme shortage in health care professionals. Our Health Care Career Scholarships provide EMH Associates students with financial assistance to pursue educational opportunities for careers or advancement in the health care field.
The Ephraim McDowell Health Care Foundation supports many events throughout the year. These events not only help us raise money for all our initiatives, but also allow us to raise awareness about certain causes, like breast cancer or women’s heart disease.

Luminosity
Our signature fundraising event is Luminosity. The funds raised at the gala are put into our Good Works Fund, which supports projects in the areas of cancer care, cardiac care and women’s health, among others.
Happy Heart Luncheon
Held in February, which is Heart Month, the Happy Heart Luncheon raises awareness of women’s heart disease. One of our most popular events, tickets for the luncheons sell out quickly.
Golf Tournament
Held in May, golf tournament raises money for our Good Works fund, which supports projects in the areas of cancer care, cardiac care and women’s health, among others.

The Hope Clinic and Pharmacy breaks down the barriers to health...
Established in 2006, the Hope Clinic and Pharmacy is a free community initiative providing health care access to people from Boyle, Casey, Garrard, Lincoln, Mercer and Washington counties. To qualify, clinic patients must:
- Suffer chronic diseases of high blood pressure, obesity, diabetes, high cholesterol and/or gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)
- Be below 150 percent of the federal poverty level
- Not be eligible for Medicaid or Medicare
- Lack private health insurance
Our clinic/pharmacy has provided thousands of clinic visits and prescriptions to low-income, chronically ill patients who lack insurance since our founding.

Chaplain’s Fund
- The Chaplain's Discretionary Fund, a valuable source of assistance for needy patients who are discharged from any Ephraim McDowell Health hospital and are unable to purchase certain vital medications, durable medical equipment, or other medical supplies needed to aid their recovery.
Community Services & Faith-based Nursing
The Community Services Department makes measurable differences in the lives of people like you who are served by Ephraim McDowell Health. Our goals are:
- To improve access to health services, especially for the underinsured and the uninsured;
- To enhance wellbeing by helping individuals develop achievable, quantifiable health goals;
- To advance knowledge by mentoring health career students from all disciplines;
- To relieve government burden by providing screening and early detection for heart disease, cancer and obesity.
A 2011 needs assessment identified the primary health risk factors in communities served by Ephraim McDowell Health. Now our nurses provide health education that equips people to make healthy choices and change their own lives to reduce their health risks. Community Health Assessment
That’s why we support four health initiatives:
- Health screenings for people at risk for heart disease, cancer and obesity
- Children’s programs about nutrition and physical activity
- Faith community nursing and health ministry programs
- School health index priorities
In our initiatives, we partner with other community entities such as school systems, health departments, churches, stockyards, and housing authorities.
