Barry's Buzz

On September 30, Madar Bux, M.D. was kind enough to open his home as EMRMC, FLH, RCH and the Foundation hosted a reception to welcome 27 new physicians who moved to our community during the 2003 and 2004 fiscal years.  These past two years have been fantastic relative to recruiting the quality of physicians that you and I would like to be associated with and to have treating our own families.  We have more work to do in the recruitment of additional physicians to fill the need in our community, however it is much easier to recruit quality physicians if you already have high-quality physicians on your medical staff.

Please help me reiterate our warm welcome to these ñnewestî physicians:

Waseem Ahmed, M.D.       Christine C. Alvarado, M.D.

Hooray!  0 hours of agency in September

The EMRMC nursing staff has an accomplishment to be proud of!

Our nursing staff works very diligently to decrease the hours we use agency nurses.  We all know that the best patient care is given when it's given by someone in the Ephraim McDowell family.  There are times, however, when it's been absolutely necessary to use agency nurses.  During the month of September, our nursing staff crossed a hurdle that we hadn't been across in years - no agency help for the entire month!!!  This achievement is due to you, our nursing staff, working flexible hours and blending responsibilities . . . Truly living our F.I.R.S.T. values.  Thanks to all of you and . . . Keep up the great work!

Don't be chicken; get your flu shot

Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center Associates are encouraged to get a flu shot this year.  This year's flu shot campaign will kick off on Monday, October 18, in the Private Dining Room.  Flu shots will be given from 6 a.m. to 10 a.m. and again from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m.

Associates may also get their flu shot, without an appointment, in the Associate Health Office between the hours of 7 a.m. and 11 a.m. October 19-22.  Associates wanting a flu shot at other times should call extension 2351 to schedule an appointment.  Flu vaccine will be available on the nursing units.

Silent Auction

EMRMC Associates and Auxiliary are co-sponsoring a Silent Auction fund-raiser to benefit the Chaplain's Discretionary Fund, provided through the Ephraim McDowell Health Care Foundation.  Items will be available for bidding October 27 and 28 from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. in the hospital lobby.

Donations of new items will be accepted through Oct. 25 by calling extension 1214.

Mission and Values

By Tim Noel, Chief Mission Officer

If you love to attend football games, if you jump and shout and generally behave like you've lost your senses, if you become angry or depressed when your team loses, then you know something about team spirit.  It means you have invested something of yourself in the team.  When they do well, you do well.  When they look ridiculous, you feel somehow like you have failed.  Some of you have also cared that much about EMH.  You have invested something of yourself here, and you want us to do well, to be a great healthcare organization.  That's why we talk about the spirit of this place.  And folks, that's exactly the way we all should feel!

Patient Satisfaction & Financial Report

The chart below details how we are doing on a fiscal year-to-date basis (cumulative figures beginning from October 2003 to current month) with our patient satisfaction scores and with our financial goals.  Remember that the financial information will always be a month behind due to closing of the books and finishing up the month's information.
