Pain Center helps individuals manage chronic and
acute pain
Individuals who experience chronic or acute pain know
how uncomfortable everyday activities can be. The Pain
Management Center at Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical
Center offers treatment options for pain and also helps
individuals learn how to manage their pain.
“Our goal is to help patients take control over their
pain so they can return to their everyday activities,”
said Dr. Madar Bux, medical director of the Pain Management
Center.
The Pain Management Center, located on the second floor
of the Medical Center, is nationally accredited by the
American Academy of Pain Management. Services, which
have been available since 1998, are provided on an outpatient
basis to individuals of all ages, except pediatrics.
The center is open Monday through Friday from 7 a.m.
to 3 p.m.
To receive services through the Pain Management Center,
individuals must be referred for treatment by a physician.
Individuals are encouraged to talk to their doctor about
the help available to them through the Pain Management
Center.
Services are provided by anesthesiologists and nurses
who are specially trained in pain management techniques.
They work with personnel from other disciplines to develop
a treatment plan that meets each patient's needs. Family
members are included in the treatment plan because they
play an important role as caregivers.
Some of the more common pain problems treated at the
Pain Management Center are the following:
- shingles pain
- chronic back pain
- automobile accident injuries
- degenerative disc disease
- spinal stenosis
- myofascial pain
- fibromyalgia
- other acute/chronic pain
“We have a treatment for shingles that has been very
successful, especially when individuals are treated
shortly after their shingles is diagnosed,” Bux said.
Some of the additional treatment methods for the pain
problems that bring patients to the Pain Management
Center may include:
- Physical therapy
- Occupational therapy
- Dietetics/Nutrition counseling
- Stress management/Relaxation training
- Family education
- Discharge planning
- Medication reduction and education
