Interventional Cardiology
A cardiologist is involved with diagnosing and treating disorders and diseases of the heart and vascular system and any congenital or degenerative condition of the heart, vessels or valves. An interventional cardiologist is a cardiologist who has completed additional training in the catheter-based treatment of structural heart diseases, including angioplasty. The specialty requires an additional year of training specifically in interventional cardiology, which is in addition to the internship, two-year medical residency program and three-year fellowship required for cardiologists.
