Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation

Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation deals with diagnosing, treating and directing a rehabilitation plan that provides the best possible patient outcomes for individuals with musculoskeletal injuries and pain syndromes (such as sports and/or work injuries or degenerative conditions like arthritis or low back pain) or those with neurological rehabilitation conditions, including stroke, brain injury and spinal cord injury. Physicians who specialize in physical medicine and rehabilitation also treat disabling conditions such as amputations, multiple trauma and burns. A physical medicine and rehabilitation physician must earn a medical degree and complete four years of additional training in physical medicine and rehabilitation.
