A gastroenterologist diagnoses and treats diseases of the digestive system, including the esophagus, stomach, small intestine, colon, pancreas, gallbladder and liver. Upon completion of medical school, a gastroenterologist spends three years in an internal medicine residency with two years additional training in gastroenterology. Some of the more common problems treated by a gastroenterologist include peptic ulcers, esophageal reflux, rectal bleeding, inflammatory bowel disease and liver abnormalities.
