Neurology
A neurologist specializes in diagnosing and treating diseases of the nervous system, which includes the brain, spinal cord, nerve and muscle. After completing medical school, neurologists undergo a four-year residency-training program and then may spend additional years in fellowship training before practicing this specialty. Some of the more common symptoms evaluated by neurologists include headache, pain, weakness, less coordination, numbness, tingling, tremor, difficulty walking or speaking and memory problems. Examples of disorders seen by a neurologist may include: Alzheimer's dementia, ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease), epilepsy, multiple sclerosis (MS), Parkinson's disease, stroke, tumors and carpal tunnel syndrome. If surgery is required, the neurologist performs the initial diagnostic work-up and coordinates with a neurosurgeon.
