Maternity Care & Obstetrics / Gynecology

Our hospitals provide all of the diagnostic and treatment services a woman might need – from routine mammograms to surgery – no matter what stage in life.  If you find yourself hospitalized for a condition common to women, trust our family-centered approach to provide specialized care and attention.

We are committed to delivering great maternity care at our two hospitals in Danville and Stanford.  We offer private, spacious birthing suites where patients labor, deliver, recover and continue their post-partum care in the same room.  The rooms have a large couch that converts to a bed so your support person can get a restful sleep.

Our birthing suites are equipped to provide natural and medicated deliveries, whichever you choose.  All suites offer birthing balls, full-size body pillows and a pushing bar.  Amenities also offered at our Stanford hospital are Jacuzzi tubs, massage chairs and large showers with multiple shower heads, plus each room has access to a manicured courtyard featuring a rose garden and rock water fountain.

Because the comfort and safety of patients and newborns are important to us, our maternity units are locked with controlled access.  As an additional level of comfort, both units are secured by the “HUGS” system, an electronic monitoring system that safeguards babies against the threat of abduction.

Patients at both of our hospitals also benefit from our participation with the Kentucky Paternity Acknowledgement Program, which allows our staff to assist unmarried couples with completing the forms necessary to voluntarily acknowledge paternity – before they leave the hospital.

We encourage our mothers to keep their babies in their room, to enhance the bonding experience, yet we also offer a fully-staffed nursery for your baby’s care when you want to rest.  Our Danville hospital also has a Level II nursery that offers more specialized care for newborns with additional needs.

Pre- and post-partum services are provided by board-certified physicians specializing in obstetrics, family medicine and pediatrics, and the Stanford hospital is staffed by a certified nurse midwife as well.  The providers are supported by certified nurses who have earned various certifications in external fetal monitoring, inpatient obstetrics, childbirth education and maternal newborn nursing.  Certified lactation counselors and consultants are also available to help new mothers find success if they choose to breastfeed.

Personal tours of our hospitals are available.  Please call (859) 239-2562 or (859) 239-2550 for a tour at Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center or (606) 365-4600 for a tour at Ephraim McDowell Fort Logan Hospital.

Once you are admitted for your baby’s delivery, you will receive a copy of our Mother and New Baby Care booklet.  You may review that information below.

Kangaroo Care

To improve the health of newborns born at our hospital, we encourage our new moms to practice Kangaroo Care – skin-to-skin contact between the mother and baby – in the hours immediately after birth and throughout the hospital stay.  This skin-to-skin contact promotes breastfeeding and bonding as well as a better transition of your baby to his new environment.  You may view a video that explains Kangaroo Care by going to www.youtube.com/user/EphraimMcdowellWeb.
